Changing the World

Spend a little time in the running blog world, and you are bound to find someone running for a cause. From the TNT runners taking on Leukemia & Lymphoma (go Bonnie!) to the runner tackling a 216 mile relay solo to raise money for the Children's Cancer Association, athletes everywhere are doing amazing things to raise awareness and money for the causes they believe in. It is inspiring; it has me thinking about what I might do to help out others through this passion that I enjoy so much.

While I have yet to decide just what I might want to take on in the name of the greater good, here are some folks I've discovered who are doing amazing things with their time and talent:

Farra Karsen: Run Woodstock Hallucination 100 miler
A cool person on dailymile and accomplished ultra runner, Farra Karsen is dedicated her Sept 24th ultra to raising funds for the American Diabetes Association.

Thomas Neuberger & Juda McGannon: Gore-Tex Transrockies Run
Thomas, a dailymile friend, will be running 113 miles of Colorado trail with elevation gains of over 25,000 feet next week. He and his running partner Juda will be doing so to challenge themselves and to raise money for the Baltimore Child Abuse Center.

James Lawrence: Tri And Give A Dam
He's racing 21 half-Ironman races in 30 weeks to raise money and awareness for the issue of water shortage. He's only got 7 left, and he's made it through the other 14!

Sam Felsenfed: Operation Jack
Sam is running at least one marathon per week in 2010 (sometimes more) to raise money and awareness for Train 4 Autism, a Team in Training like organization which raises money for autism research. Not only is he running all of those marathons, he's doing them pretty darn fast too! He's got 38 under his belt so far.

Dan Rose: Vermont Long Trail
Dan is taking off August 23rd to run the Vermont Long Trail, a 273 mile footpath running from north to south. Dan is attempting to set a speed record and complete the journey in approximately 5 days while raising money for the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Did I mention that he is also a non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor?

Ashley Kumlien: MS Run The US
25 year old Ashley is running 3,230 miles across the United States this summer to raise awareness and funds for those afflicted by multiple sclerosis. Inspired by her mother, who has been battling MS for 27 years, Ashley is already nearing the 2/3 mark of her journey.

Charlie Wittmack: The World Tri
After hearing about Charlie's exploits, you may come to conclusion that there is nothing the human spirit can't accomplish. This adventurer/attorney/professor is swimming 275 miles down the Thames and across the English Channel, biking 9,000 miles from France to India and then running 950 miles from the Bay of Bengal and up in to the Himalayas, where he'll complete the journey by summiting Everest. The project will be supporting global health and education initiatives. Wow.

It's clear that there are many ways - both big and small - to positively impact the world while doing the thing we love. What is one small thing you could do to help others through your running?

  1. I love this post! I actually just posted about missing my Team in Training running buddies. I've been solo for about the past 6 months and would love to train with them again soon! It is such an amazing group and I would encourage every runner to check it out! I'm an RN in critical care and I see people with cancer often and it's awful. To know you are doing something for someone else is so wonderful!
