Feels like the first time...

As I wrapped up this morning's run, I couldn't help but hear this tune in my head. These past two runs have been so darn hard. Everything is aching and slow. They say that rest and recovery helps you grow stronger, but I feel like I haven't been running in years. What is going on?

I did have one saving grace however. The Endurance Planet podcast. If you haven't checked out this gem of a show, you are missing out on a faithful running companion who will inspire you to run just a bit farther. Today I listened to a story on badass ultrarunner Marshall Ulrich's transformation, Jamie Donaldson's post Badwater win interview, and an interview with a first time Badwater finisher. The podcast is a polished, fascinating look at endurance athletes and competitions.

Why listen to a podcast, you might be wondering, especially if you are a music devotee. I resisted podcasts myself, preferring my uptempo music for my daily runs. But as my long runs got longer, I felt myself growing bored with the music I had. So I checked out podcasts, and to my surprise, I found them to be an even better running companion than music. With podcasts, you can engage your mind while you are running, and you'll fall into your own rhythm more naturally. It's almost as if you are running with another person, but you don't have to do any of the talking. Now I look forward to hearing new episodes.

If you're curious about running podcasts, this is a great resource to discover some of the great ones being produced today. There are also a great number of podcasts on literature, current events, comedy and more to be discovered on the iTunes podcast list.

So the next time you think "if I hear this song one more time, someone's getting it," I highly recommend checking out a podcast or two on your next run. It just might make a bad run good!
