19 weeks until the 50 miler.
That's really not very long.
Someone needs a training plan.
There are millions of training plans for marathons, half marathons, 10ks. 50 milers - not as much. I purchased the Definitive Guide to Ultrarunning thinking that it would be chock full of 50 mile plans...there was one article with some general suggestions about how to go about getting ready.
I'm the kind of runner who needs to review a bunch of plans, think it all through, and plot out my training weeks. Only to ignore them of course, but the value is in the contemplation of what needs to be done. I may move my key workouts around, but I like to have a few milestones that help me to feel prepared.
There are some decent resources online:
Runner's World take on 50 mile training
Santa Clarita's build your own 50 mile schedule app
Run 100 Mile's personal plan
Hal Higdon's Comrades plan
Words of wisdom from the UltRunR board
I'll be perusing these today and sketching out a road map to get me to Autumn Leaves at the end of August.
If anyone has a good plan to share or words of advice, please let me know!
I just do my own thing but set myself some milestones along the way. These are something like run 2 or 3 marathons, 2x50km runs and at least 1x60km run. The 60km helps a lot mentally knowing there will only be 20km to go after that.
ReplyDeleteTake a look at www.irunfar.com, Bryan Powell's site. He's also released a book, "Relentless Forward Progress" (best running related book name ever!!!). From the looks of your race history the book is probably review but it contains a decent chapter on creating your training plan, and some good samples, that I've used to create my first 50k plan (for my first ultra).
