what do you love?

My alarm went off early this morning.

4:30 or some equally awful time.

But I wasn't upset.  Trail run day!  Funny how what is crappy under normal circumstances becomes fun when you love it.  As I went through my morning ritual of checking in on the variety of social media sites, I saw this tweet:
Is it better to train for something you are pretty good at (marathons for me) or to train for something you like but not so good at (trails)?
This question just gets right in to the heart of what I love to write about.

My response was immediate.  Do what you love.  Even if you aren't good at it.  Even if you are the very worst one at it.  But do it - because isn't that what life is all about?

I am trying to learn Spanish right now.  I love the language.  Love, love, love it.  I was just in Mexico, and I took every opportunity to use what I knew to speak with people - even though I know they found many of my attempts amusing.  I could have worried about not doing it right, or saying something silly (like "My name is Mazatlan" - which I did say, instead of "I love Mazatlan") - but I would have missed so much more than I would have gained by not putting myself out there in an attempt to avoid looking silly.

It can be so easy to give up on something because we are afraid we will look stupid or incompetent.  But isn't the best act, the bravest act, the one that allows to be vulnerable, to do what we love, to follow our hearts even when it means we might appear absurd?

Are you following your heart, or are you trying to play it safe?

  1. Kind of like love. Be "out" there and roll with it.

  2. Life makes us do enough of things we are good at (work--hopefully), therefore, our hobbies should be what we love.

  3. Interesting question that I've thought about a lot. Is there value in pursuing something you love in which you have no natural talent or ability? I think so.

  4. I try to do both, doing what I love while playing it safe, its a very hard balance sometimes.

  6. I have learned to not care what others think, and do just run because I absolutely love it. I may not be the fastest one out there, but there is definitly no stopping me, follow your heart and all else will eventually fall into place. :D
